HEZARFEN ENSEMBLE

Since its formation in January 2010, Hezarfen Ensemble has had an enormous impact on the contemporary music scene in Istanbul.  It has given countless Turkish premieres of works by composers from around the world, in innovative formats, as well as presenting Turkish works to European audiences in Germany and Holland as well as in Turkey itself.     Hezarfen has appeared on the Istanbul Music Festival (2011, 2012), Rotterdam Operadagen (2012) and on series at Borusan Music House (2010-2012) Akbank Sanat (2011) the New Music Days Bilkent University Festival (2011) The Institut Francais, and Goethe Institute.  It celebrated Istanbul’s and Essen’s 2010 year as European cultural capitals with a concert of Turkish composers in Essen in conjunction with the Folkwangs Conservatory.

In conjunction with IKSV and other institutions Hezarfen has commissioned and premiered new works by Turgut Pögün, Özkan Manav, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Onur Türkmen, Ed Bennett, Adrian Hart, Taner Akyol, and Kamran Ince, and has collaborated with ensembles Yurodny (Ireland) and Adaptor (Germany) and VocaalLAB  Nederland (NL), and working with prominent conductors Lucas Vis, Gergely Madaras, and Beat Furrer.  Through its residency at MIAM, it plays a key role in the development of new Turkish musical voices—giving workshop and performance opportunities to Turkish composers annually. Hezarfen was awarded ‘Best Chamber Music Ensemble’ by Andante Magazine (Turkey) in 2012.

Based in Istanbul, Hezarfen is an ensemble of internationally recognized musicians dedicated to the highest standards of contemporary performance and the proliferation of contemporary music originating both from Turkey and abroad. Through its performances, lectures and workshops, the ensemble aims to energize the contemporary music scene in Istanbul, providing an international platform on which Turkish composers can have their music performed at the highest level, and one on which the most important contemporary international composers have their works introduced to Turkey. Hezarfen works with projects that facilitate intercultural exchange and encourage diverse artistic and musical encounters. Together with its long-term commitment to raising levels of awareness and accessibility of contemporary musical art for audiences in Turkey, it provides advanced training for the best of the new generation of musicians through workshops and collaborations with internationally known conductors and members of Ensemble Modern, MusikFabrik Cologne and other partner international elite musicians and ensembles.
